Tree Recovery Campaign

The Katrina Tree Recovery Campaign took shape from the common interests and a timely conversation between Audubon and The Arbor Day Foundation following the storm. Knowledge of Audubon Mississippi’s presence on the gulf coast and The Arbor Day Foundation’s annual membership drive prompted a shared vision for helping to replace the many trees destroyed by the hurricane. As stated in the press release, over the course of a four-month period, this nationally-advertised campaign raised funds from people across 43 states that sent 25,600 bare-root natives trees to coastal Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana in March. In addition, over 100 volunteers assisted in distributing these plants at 20 sites across the region. The response from grateful recipients was overwhelming and a second distribution is being planned for late fall of 2006.

This component of Operation Backyard Recovery will focuses on promoting the planting of native trees and shrubs to replace those lost during the storm and encouraging homeowners to restore their yards with bird-friendly species. This part of the project will build upon existing programming and partnerships between Audubon Mississippi and other organizations and communities, including already established community-based native plant nurseries and native plant landscaping projects at schools, businesses and government facilities.

As with the birdhouse component of Operation Backyard Recovery, this effort has led to a broader awareness of the importance of good backyard habitat for wildlife. The value of native plants as shelter and as a source of forage for birds and wildlife is a key message along with the recognition of the resilience of native plants to natural disturbances, including hurricanes.
